Tea and a Slice of Art

Work taking art in hospitals often throws up some super exhibitions. On now at the South Kensington and Chelsea Mental Health Hospital, London are the Lyons Lithographs. On the walls are 32 of the original 40 prints, made between 1947 anf 1955. The prints were commissioned to decorate the Lyons tearooms in the post war years. Leading British artists took part, including L.S.Lowry, Edward Ardizzone, Edward Bawden and William Scott. The lithographs (on loan from the Towner Collection, Eastbourne) have not been shown in London for over 30 years. The exhibition runs until 28th February 2008. Tel. 020 8846 6046 for full details.

If you cannot get to see them then there is a super book just published which illustrates all the lithographs and gives a full history of the Lyons Lithographs.
"Tea and a Slice of Art": The Lyons Lithographs 1946-1955 by Charlie Batchelor is available from Emma Mason British Prints at £25.00 incl p+p. http://www.emmamason.co.uk/ Tel: 01323 413555

Lollipop Designs at LUXEVILLE

Cressida Luxton who runs the on-line shop Luxeville sent over these greetings cards by Rachel Le Mesurier of Lollipop Designs. Apart from being lovely and unusual cards in themselves (non of your views of England here) they come with a stamp where-by you can customise them adding pigeons to the telegraph wires.

Luxeville as a shop is well worth a look and Cressida has shown her exquisite taste and judgement to stock Sarah's Fabric Kits which are well on the way to selling out and needing a reprint.
Also available from lollipop is this cotton shopper.

Last Chance - Spectacular Craft at V&A

This joint V&A and Crafts Council exhibition Spectacular Craft is ending on 17th February so this weekend is the last chance. I came across it by accident whilst Collect was on, but it is worth a trip.

The small exhibition features installations by 8 artists

working meticulously but on a huge scale. I was particularly impressed by Lu Shengzong's huge papercuts. The 8 artists are working with wire, glass, wallpaper, paper, wood, lace, video amongst other things to present impressive and thoughtful installations.
This Dale Chihuly chandelier wasn't in the exhibition, just above the information desk but looked pretty impressive non-the-less. Also see this website for more of Dale's work

Etsy - Rob Ryan

Rob Ryan seems to be huge at the moment with a new book out t This is For You", work seen in respected galleries, and hugely complementary articles in Vogue and other journals, so it is lovely that he sells work on Etsy as well as keeping a blog detailing new work.

He has released an A3 screenprint "Can We Shall We" just in time for Valentines Day I've seen it sold out in some galleries but it is still available at Rob s Etsy Shop!

Tim Riddihough at Hastings Arts Forum

Tim Riddihough exhibited his large reclaimed wooden sculptures and assemblages in the entrance lobby at the 2006 Brighton Art Fair. He has a Solo show starting on the 23rd February fro a week (to 28th Feb) at the Hastings Arts Forum 36 Marina, St Leonards. East Sussex.
His large sculptural work sometimes looks like dalek-type machines, which combine elements of transport but also each piece develops a strong anthropomorphic personality sometime humourous sometimes an element of Pathos.

Anyway I'm a fan so if you can get along to the show it's only on for a week.

Hastings is well worth a look - it's a nice looking town but also has a fantastic co-operative makers shop Made In Hastings and the Todds Gallery (with a Richard Adams exhibition)amongst others, as well as an organic bakery , furnicular railways and decent fish and chips!
