The Crafts Council are holding a competition to choose a British contemporary craft maker who will design and produce pieces that will be the official gifts from the UK at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
The Crafts Council is working in partnership with the British Council, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and other Founder Sponsors of the UK Pavilion. The first competition is to design and make the UK’s official gift to Shanghai and the second competition is to design and make up to 80 limited edition pieces that will be the VIP gifts of the UK Pavilion, "the Dandelion" designed by Heatherwick Studio.
The Shanghai World Expo 2010 will focus on the theme of city and metropolitan evolution in the 21st century. The winning proposals will reflect this theme of ‘Better City, Better Life’ and will be either in ceramic, acrylic, textile, glass or metal.
“This is the first time a piece of British craft will be given as an international Expo gift and the Crafts Council is delighted to have secured this high profile commission. This competition is a unique opportunity for a British maker to represent their country and contemporary craft on a world stage” Rosy Greenlees, Executive Director, Crafts Council
