Slowcoast

I was given a book 'Conversations On the Coast' by Nick Hand the other day so have only just been made aware of Nick Hand's website slowcoast about his journeys around the coasts of the British Isles talking to and filming 100 artisans and makers along the way - including printmakers, boatbuilders, fishermen, blacksmiths, goldsmiths and distillers.

He edited these interviews into 'Soundslides' the same day of interview and posted them on the internet immediately so friends could follow his progress in almost real time.

I think the thing that I like about this website and book is the travel element - following the coastline of the British Isles by pedal-cycle at a fast enough pace to do it but slow enough to have time to see the countries of the British Isles, stop, drink a coffee, talk to strangers and make the interviews with artisans. Walking, cycling, kayaking and horseriding to me seem to be the idea means of travel. A natural speed and unshielded from people and the weather.

I couldn't embed the videos and more images from his website so you'll have to have a look at slowcoast yourself - but do it at leisure there's lots to hear.
