Elle Deco - 'why art fairs are fab'

Elle Deco this month.

Nice series of interviews about buying art - from galleries, auctions art fairs etc including the founder of Brighton Art Fair
Feels slightly weird to be described as an art insider (I've never actually met Charles Saatchi or Nicholas Serota!) but still...

Artwave Festival - Lewes

Artwave Festival - Lewes and surroundings

August 25th - September 9th.

At the weekend we went over to see some of the Open Houses taking part in Artwave. Took the train to Lewes and walked around seeing the ones near the town centre. Another weekend will drive out to see others in places nearby.

Of the ones near Lewes centre our first stop was at St John's Terrace. Here we saw beautiful hand thrown ceramics by Topsy Jewell:

and my favourite of everything we saw on our visit to Lewes; printed feathers by Rebecca Jewell. We had seen Rebecca's feathers in London and this time we bought one - and came home with this beautiful and delicate Puffin, printed by Rebecca on a feather and framed in a vintage frame.

Then we walked up the High Street and visited Carolyn Trant who is showing prints from her studio a selection covering 20 years of prints, as well as her hand-printed books and cards. Great to see so much of Carolyn's prints together. This is at Lewes Constitutional Club on Lewes High Street.

We also called in at the Open House at St Michael's Old Rectory, futher up on the High Street, to see David Rhys Jones's ceramics and Peter Van Breda's paintings. We particularly loved the ceramics.

After a coffee we walked back down the High Street and spent time at Westgate Chapel to look at the "Picasso at Play" exhibition of photographs from the Lee Miller Archives at Farley Farm. Great images.
A piece of art from Hibbert Room Westgate Chapel, 92A High Street
There's lots more to see at the Artwave Festival - these are just the ones we particularly liked and managed to fit in on visit one afternoon at the weekend. For details of all the artists mentioned and Artwave see: www.artwavefestival.org

The Dialogue Collective at MADE LONDON

The Dialogue project was started by Helen Carnac and Mikala Djorup in 1999 to allow verbal and practical exchanges between jewellery and silversmithing students and lecturers from The Cass, London and the Alchimia Jewellery School in Florence. The subsequent ‘conversations’ culminated in a number of exhibitions at both institutes and external events, e.g. the Inhorgenta jewellery fair in Munich and on a London Routemaster bus (‘Dialogue 5: Travel’) during the Association of Contemporary Jewellery’s ‘Carry the Can’ conference of 2006.
When Carnac left in 2006 The Dialogue project became the Dialogue Collective, it retained its remit; to discuss, explore and develop new approaches to design, fabricating, curating and showing jewellery and silversmithing as a collaborative process.  The relationship with and the experience of, the viewer/buyer remains uppermost in minds of the Collective. Their use of games and activities alongside exhibitions is becoming a stalwart of the Collective and works well to engage people and open up dialogues.

With 13 themed events under its belt in total and 8 separate exhibitions in the last two and a half years the Dialogue Collective is gathering a momentum. They regularly curate an exhibition during Schmuck in Munich and this year debuted to great acclaim at the Legnica Jewellery Festival, Poland. Their show at the Manoir D’Ango, France completed the ‘Dialogue 12: Renaissance’ trilogy of exhibitions early this year. Future shows in Belgium, Munich and MADE London make it look like another busy period for the Collective.

The London based collective has 20 current members, all bar one, who is an invited artist, have a connection to The Cass, and mirrors the diverse make up of the capital with makers originally from Australia, Finland, Estonia, France, Poland, Italy, Portugal, Bahrain as well as Britain. The energy within the Collective and at the events they create is partly due to the Collective’s balance of undergraduates with their fearlessness and positive naivety alongside established makers who bring their experience and knowledge. As the Dialogue Collective grows, the interests and focus of its members also advances and diversifies leading to splinter projects focusing on commercialism, craft, art and drawing.
£20 Project
In 2010 the Dialogue Collective opened a Pop up Shop for one week on Columbia Road in London. It sold Contemporary Jewellery and Silvermithing pieces, designed and made by members of the Collective plus invited guest practitioners. Everything for sale was priced at £20. It was the first time the Collective had presented work to an audience who had little or no experience of contemporary jewellery and silversmithing and it was a great success.

The range of work was breathtaking - approximately 300 pieces, reflecting the varied approaches of 27 makers.  The challenge to produce work for £20 led some to focus on their choices of materials, some on manufacturing processes and some on the perception of value. The motivation wasn’t necessarily in producing something that sold at £20 but in producing something that was innovative, retained the integrity of more expensive contemporary work and that could successfully retail at a low price. Some pieces worked really well and some not so, it was left to the audience and their wallets to decide but what was clearly apparent was that the myriad of solutions produced an exciting and energetic show.

The Dialogue Collective has again taken up the challenge for MADE London. Each maker is designing and making a limited edition piece that will retail at £20. Presenting the visitors to MADE London with a wall of (approximately) 150 pieces of jewellery and silversmithing. Offering a fantastic opportunity to pick up something unique from either an emerging young talent or a more established maker at a very reasonable price.

Made By Hand for Wallpaper* from Anthony Burrill on Vimeo.

I'm sorry, the screen might not work depending on your browser! you can use the link above to go direct which means you can see it bigger.

I know I'm biased being (amongst other things) a letterpress printer but Wallpaper have made a nice video about Adams of Rye one of the last High Street letterpress printers in the country, printing a poster for wallpaper.

I just love the Wallace and Gromit nature of the huge Heidelberg press with each lever and suction pad doing a tiny but essential job.

Artist of the Week - Richard Wade

Richard Wade paints colourful, lively, meticulously detailed work inspired by the surrounding objects, places and people within the landscape. He will be showing his work at the Brighton Art Fair.

Where did you train? What did training teach you and what do you wish it had taught you?
I studied Fine Art at Falmouth College of Art. It was a really amazing place to study, Cornwall is really beautiful and a very inspiring place to be based for three years. I found that as a student we were very much left to our own devices with very little input from the tutors. In my first year I was put in a studio with about 15 other first years a little way away from the main art school, we were all quite anarchic and spent too much time having fun and not enough time getting on with our work. I would say that I found the freedom was great if you knew what direction your work was heading but not so good if you were struggling with direction or ideas.

Is being an artist your only job, or do you have other employment?
At the moment I am working full time as an artist, however for the last five years I worked as an assistant to an established London based painter whilst continuing with my own working practice. This was a really good experience as I worked on some very interesting projects including two residencies in museums and a show with a major London dealer and it set the bar quite high in terms of the quality of the work that was being produced and level of professionalism expected.

One favourite living artist?
Colour plays a big part in my art and although I had always been aware of Peter Doig as a successful artist, when I saw his solo show at Tate Britain in 2008 it just completely blew my mind. His work in the flesh was so immersive and vivid, it really stood out.

One favourite historical artist?
When I was studying for my A level art I chose Claude Monet’s watercolours for my personal project. I went to see them at the Musee de l’Orangerie and it was like viewing iconography in a chapel they had real transcendental qualities about them.

What is the most interesting / fun job you have had?
I really enjoyed working as an artist’s assistant. Although we were working to very high standards, it was quite a relaxed and fun atmosphere and I really enjoyed the work and felt although I really wanted to be there and learn as much as possible.

If you could collaborate with anyone living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?
I really like Wim Wender’s work. My dissertation at Art school was based around his film Paris Texas and I found him to be really fascinating and complex as a character. Seeing an exhibition of his photographs at the Haunch of Venison in London was really mesmerising he has a really special way of capturing images and making them seem unique.

At age 16 who most influenced your style?
At the age of 16 I remember being a big fan of Diego Rivera’s work.

Last book / film that blew your mind?
The last film that I thought was really amazing was Drive, it is definitely going to be talked about for years to come. The last book I read which was really good was Fifth Business by Robertson Davies the first book in the Depford trilogy.

What music are you currently listening to?
Am listening to a lot of M83, I Break Horses and Lanterns on the Lake, but loads of other stuff as well.

How many hours do you waste on the internet each day?
I deliberately don’t take my laptop to my studio with me so that I don’t get distracted, otherwise I could be trawling away for hours on end.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be and why?
I loved San Francisco when a friend and I travelled down the Pacific Coast High way about five years ago it is definitely my favourite American City it felt very liberal, artsy and cultural. Failing that I think the equivalent in England is probably Brighton. I have always enjoyed visiting whenever I have been and there always seems to be loads of interesting stuff going on.

Where and what is your studio?
At the moment I am two months into a one year residency at the Anteros Arts Centre in Norwich. An Old Tudor building close to the centre of. I am in a glass fronted shop which is at one end of the building so people walking by in the street can watch me painting, which takes a little getting used to.

Do you have a good work/life balance?
At the moment I am trying to really make the most of this year so am going to my studio about 6 days a week so my life is a lot about work and not much about life at the moment so the balance is probably not great- but enjoying it none the less.

What one word would describe your feeling of doing your work?
Exciting.

What would your dream commission be?
To do a series of paintings inspired by a road trip across the USA.
